On shadows

Yolande Dorward

A shadow can only be casted on the basis that there is light…

Give space to just let the emanation of these words unfold…

So in a moment or period of darkness, there first had to be light. In other words, when we feel sad, emotional, withdrawn, tense, frustrated, depressed, anxious, awkward, ‘off’, ‘out’, ‘not ourselves’, and the list of examples can go on and on, we first were living with vibrancy, truth, love, a knowing, confidence, harmony and joy… in whatever capacity… even if it was just for a fleeting moment.

Can anyone relate to this? Can anyone relate to the dipping in and out of being totally ‘on’?

Has anyone had an amazing day only to come home and eat everything in sight?

Or had an incredible conversation and doubted yourself afterwards with ‘I should’ve said this’ or ‘I shouldn’t have said that’?

Or ever went into the complication of doubt with ‘that seems too simple’?

Or when someone greeted you with ‘hello’ you awkwardly responded with ‘good thanks’!

I could go on and on with everyday, simple examples that we just brush off. But there’s something in these experiences. There’s an intricate yet powerful detail that we overlook and dismiss. There was a lightness and effortlessness first, an ease.

This is where we need to go. This is what we need to look at, explore, talk about, expose. What is going on that stops us from living as absolutely amazing beings consistently? What is going on for us to switch so quickly?

There is so much within society that feeds the narrative that we can't be magnificently 'on'. Watering down a genuine compliment that is received is a very common and relatable example - "I love your outfit!" "Oh this old thing? I've had it for ages!" - or feeling incredible about how you're living and feeling and receive tainted comments that internally crush you, so subtlety feeding doubt.

The thing about shadows is that they only exist as a barrier of light. They exist first because of light.

So when you are being fed awful thoughts about yourself or are in a downward spiral about a comment or a movement that was made towards you (shadow), you first had to be living, breathing, moving, dressing, speaking or writing (emanating) something incredibly illuminating, otherwise those things would not exist.
